Taking the Plunge

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

With XBox 360. I bought it yesterday because I just found out that Beautiful Katamari was released a couple weeks ago. So I got that and the XBox last night. It looks pretty stellar on my tv : ) Rocky said I need to get BioShock next. I think I need to get some more free time to play games though.

Hey, you all should check out that php|tek conference. I plan on going.

Man, there’s like 500 tabs

Or something like that.

So due to a posted comment about my Ruby bashing, I’ve decided to ease up on the language a bit (ok, no I haven’t but I’ll continue to read more about it). It still irks me as I read about it though. In any case, I’ll write some needed scripts in it to get a better taste of it.

Tabs time. Note I really liked the Perl ->PHP translation. There should be a Ruby equivalent. Can anyone suggest one?

Tim’s Lab

Sweet, WordPress 2.3 came out and it’s mine, all mine.

Well I found an awesome ruby script on dzone today. I spent a day modding it for logs on site and removing it’s requirement for SSH since Ruby’s ssh module is gay (like Ruby in general) and doesn’t support Kerberos.

Speaking of Ruby’s flaming gayness, I really don’t like Ruby. Let’s be honest, It’s perl wrapped in python.

  • There’s almost no built in functions (like python)
  • It has those terrible $_ $; $, etc etc etc variables
  • You have to compile new extensions to the language (like CPAN, god awful CPAN)
  • It uses different prefixes depending on the variable type (like perl)
  • It makes a futile (and useless) attempt to natural language-ize a programming language. IMHO I think this is a big waste of time. If you’re an adept developer, you can pick up on new languages with relatively little pain. Reading code is also one of those things that becomes second nature when you’re a developer. In a nutshell, there’s really no need to make a programming language read like english.

So I don’t like Ruby. Besides, it’s just another fad and it will die along with the rest of the fads.

In any event though, here are tabs. One of them even has that awesome ruby script that does opengl stuff.

VOIP

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

So the other day I attended a VOIP dog and pony show at Cisco’s business demo building thingamajig in Chicago. They demo’d this new product they are trying to sell called TelePressence. It’s this wicked cool video meeting thing. It’s got 3 64 inch plasma screen tv’s connected to 3 video cameras and the whole thing streams across the internet; 6 Mb per tv, yowza!

It costs a cool 300k though : (

In addition to that though, they demo’d all their VOIP technology, and it all is really really cool. Granted I’ve had no exposure to VOIP stuff, so almost anything I see related to it I deem cool.

So yeah. Today we put Ubuntu Gutsy beta on Joe’s Macbook Pro. It works great! I put it on my desktop back at home and ran into some quirks during installation, but I worked around them and all is fine.

Now for some tabs. ext looks neat!
