Simile = Neat

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I have this love/hate relationship with finding new open source code to use. I typically include lots of different open source code in applications I develop for work; web based stuff in particular. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to find an update to Simile’s Timeplot tool in an article posted to dzone. The only problem is that I am in the home stretch of a rev for the in-house tool that I want to use it in. Guess I’ll have to put it off until later.

Nifty Little Tool for Windows

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Hey so today I more or less ran out of disk space on one of my VMWare images at work. I was hoping that someone had experienced the same problem, and I was in luck. With the help of several websites and tools, I managed to extend my Windows partition and breathe new life into the disk image. I put together a tutorial for those interested.

No More San Diego

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Thank God, that place sucks.

San Diego is one of those dirty places where everyone who lives there thinks they’re kings and queens, when in fact it’s just Warrenville on the west coast. It has a lot of hills; too many. It’s no wonder that property costs as much as it does out there, since there’s nowhere to build anything. This weekend went by too quickly, am I already back at work?

Update: It’s been pointed out to me that there are other great MySQL top-like programs.

Internet 2

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

There’s a conference going on at the lab for Internet 2 and I’m attending several speeches tomorrow. Also giving one, but that’s another story. The conference is too rushed. Speeches can only be 20 minutes long and for a lot of this stuff, that’s just not enough time. Plus each day (of the entire week) is completely filled. I’m talking like till like 8 pm. Too much stuff. Anyways, links to clear out fire-yum.

Another Bitchfest

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

I’m almost finished with a book call The Insider by Dan Verton. I had semi-high hopes for this book since it’s one of the ones I nabbed from a guy I worked with when he was giving away a stash of his books. It’s been a fairly informative book, showcasing a number of insider attacks that companies and government institutions have been hit with. As I get to the end of the book though Verton has succumbed to whining about political correctness.

This is one of my big pet peeves with regards to the security industry. Security people think that corporations and government have a massive, oh my god stop everything, problem when these people assess the orgs and find porn/pics/media/etc traveling across the wire. They always make such a big deal out of the situation as if it’s a highly abnormal thing. They try to sway the top execs of the company into buying their services or products by showing how employees are wasting resources by surfing the web when they could instead be making the company millions.

As you might have already guessed, this kinda behavior pisses me off. Employees dont like their employers looking over their shoulders, and they especially don’t like their employers mandating bogus rules like “you will work 100% while at work”. Gimme a break. Nobody, not even the top execs, work the straight 8-12 hours a day that a salaried person works. Everyone needs a little downtime to refresh themselves after staring at mind-numbing work for a couple hours. When the employees reach that mind-numbed state, they take a break and do something else to get their mind off work. When they come back, they’re refreshed and more productive. Anyone who doesn’t see this is a moron.

So yeah, Verton is a moron. He’s just another one of those FUD machines that is trying to turn the job of security professional into content police. Save it buddy, I don’t give a flying rat’s ass about where my users go. If your infrastructure is solid, you’ve got bigger fish to fry than tracking down people who surf for porn. It’s like why the hell do we have so many drug busts when border security is obviously a bigger problem. Move some of the damn police down to the border. Geez, idiots.

Back From Vacation

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Woo, week long vacation in Florida has come to an end. It was a fun time. I was in West Palm Beach visiting an uncle who has an awesome house. Then headed across the state to North Port and Sarasota to visit my grandparents. We went fishing on the Gulf for a day which was great but blisteringly hot. I’ve got a pretty neat sunburn but it’s nothing that aloe wont fix. Back to work as of today though, bleh.
